What are the perceptions about Russia as a tourist destination?

I am writing a dissertation about the perceptions of tourists about Russia as a tourist destination. So your answers are highly valuable to me! Thanks in advance!

Russia is a VERY big and a VERY diverse place. General perceptions is still of a grey and (today) rather crime swept urban environmnet and also the bnotion of 1000s of miles of empty frozen tundra. Both can be true but Russia can be anything depending where you are.
This question is unanswerable. Why don’t you try looking up ordinary visitors and traveller’s blogs and travelogue on the web – there are lots and easily found with a few well chosen keywords. This will give you a far better idea from the biased tour guides or the rubbish spouted by people who have never been. You will also get a better idea than from those who have visited Russia on package tours.

Or of course you could go yourself one day and be surprised.

  1. Personally I like the ordinary Russian people and would enjoy meeting and talking with them. However the state systems are so horribly corrupt I do not think I would risk going there. Shame isn’t it……

  3. I worked in the Russian far East and visited Moscow a few times, I’d like to go back to see St Petersburg and maybe the black sea coast.
Russia has a wealth of natural tourist attractions and fantastic scenery which these days is getting rarer. I think it has a lot to offer tourists.

  4. Depends where you go in Russia.
    Moscow is fantastic but expensive.
As for crime.Well if you look at the statistics given the population of Moscow you will see that compared to other cities ( especially in America ) crime is extremely low.
Corruption? Well everyone talks about corruption in Moscow and Russians say it is a crazy city and that everything in Russia goes to Moscow.
In that respect its a bit like Britain

From my personal experience Russia is a great vacation place because of the famous sites to visit. Infrastructure, however, still needs to be improved in order to attract more tourism. Furthermore, language barriers often make it very difficult to interact with the local population, resulting in a visit feeling of just seeing half of the country. But following the history, improvements are visible and should be intensified.
