Modern mass tourism in the Himalayan region started in 1950s after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed the Mt. Everest and made the region popular in other parts of the world, that had until then more or less ignored the region.

2. This region of the world became more accessible:

After the Indian-Chinese border war in 1962, a huge number of roads were built in the Indian part of the Himalayas – until 1970, 10 000 km of roads. Although their purpose was primarily a military one, they opened the region to modern mass transportation and foreign tourists

3. The attraction of this area is in the diversity of sports available:

The Himalayas offer the modern tourist a widespread range of possibilities: hiking, skiing, rafting, kayaking, canyoning, rock climbing, mountain biking, bungee jumping, paragliding etc

4. There are also unique cultural attractions:

Gorkha is the birth place of King Prithivi Narayan Shah – The Great, the founder of modern Nepal. Situated on a hill overlooking the snowy peaks of the himalayas, there is a beautiful old palace known as Gorkha Durbar. There are two attractive temples of Gorakhnath and Kali inside the palace precinct. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple of Gorakhnath. Gorkha can be reached in about 6 hours from Kathmandu and in about 4 hours from Pokhara. A side trip to Manakamana on the way to Gorkha is very enjoyable and interesting.

Among all the places in India the Himalayan eco tourism is the most visited destination. Various regions in the Himalayas are still unexplored by the people. The region is rich in natural resources and showcases a variety of flora and fauna. It is also the home for various rare species.
