The Palm islands are actually pretty cool, but The World is not as exciting. Whereas the Palms have an organized, symmetrical structure, shopping areas and infact an entire infrastructure, ‘The World’ is just piles of course sand dumped haphazardly in the ocean to form ‘islands.’ If it very accurately portrayed a map of the world it might be more enticing, but as it stands they might as well just call it ‘The Sand Piles.’

itaksimi is right. The migrant workers earn a lot more money than they ever would in their home countries, which is why they come to Dubai. Although many are poorly treated, their families are a lot better off than they have ever been.
A lot of people from my country (Philippines) go there as maids for example – many enjoy their time there and all earn more money than back home.
