Geotourism, a term coined by the National Geographic, is tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. This is the commitment of the Foundation through the award winning Yachana Lodge. The Lodge, now part of the Foundation, besides being an incredible place for visitors to see and learn about the Amazon, is also a teaching facility for the Yachana Technical High School and an income generator to help support the school. Education, sustainable tourism and protection of the rainforest are all subjects that Douglas McMeekin will bring to his presentation.

Marge Davis, a contributor to the Tennessee Conservationist Magazine, talks about sustainable tourism, the largest growing sector of the tourism industry in Tennessee, and how there is not a trade off between May Town Center and no development. Development can happen regardless of the May Town Center.

CALL or E-MAIL the Planning Commission: ACT NOW!!! EVERY SINGLE CALL AND E-MAIL MAKES A STRONG DIFFERENCE!! If you express our concerns to the council and commission about the location, feasibility, and purpose of this project, your phone call or e-mail could be one of the deciding factors that helps the local government to see that this is the wrong time and place to be creating such a development. The sheer amount of infrastructure resources needed and traffic changes for the Center could seriously effect your neighborhood!!! ACT BEFORE THE JUNE 24, 2009 MEETING WITH THE PLANNING COMMISSION AND JULY 7, 2009 MEETING WITH THE METRO CITY COUNCIL!!!
CALL or E-MAIL your Metro Council Representative:

In 2004 we introduced our first tour, the “Eco-Culture Experience”. This spring, the package was chosen by the editors of National Geographic Traveller as the “Tour of a Lifetime” for 2008, based on a criteria of authenticity, seasoned expertise, sustainability, unprecedented access, and local connections.

We base our travel principles on the newly emerging geotourism concepts. Geotourism is defined by National Geographic as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. Geotourism incorporates the concept of sustainable tourism—that destinations should remain unspoiled for future generations—while allowing for enhancement that protects the character of the locale. We have integrated these ideas and concepts into our overall approach.

Welcome to our CoaST film! The film is a collaboration project between CoaST Ambassadors, CoaST Members and our filmakers James Ellwood and Matt Pontin. We hope you enjoy it and if you have any queries please contact us, see the end of the film for our contact details. So, what do we do? We work with everyone (from cake-makers to photographers, campsites to recycling collectors, community groups, hotels, colleges, universities, beach cafes, designers and beer brewers) to ensure tourism delivers social, economic and environmental benefit for all, as well as a fantastic holiday for all our visitors. We started in Cornwall; and we’ve gone viral, with members collaborating on our on-line One Planet Tourism network from across more than 50 counties. It’s all about One Planet Tourism: tourism operating within its environmental, social and economic means, and providing environmental, social and economic benefit. Where-ever you’re based, where you are is a fantastic place to visit, to live and to work; it’s even better when we do it within our resources. And we absolutely believe that as there isn’t one single way of making everything right overnight, that every single small thing adds up to make that big difference.

Small steps. Big impact. And that takes us towards One Planet Tourism. As one member says, it now involves us all working together – Way Beyond Tourism.

A sustainable tourism industry: one hotel, one campsite, one boat-ride, one meal, one journey, one visitor, one holiday at a time. Which means all businesses, and groups, and communities, from all tourism and non-tourism sectors, working collectively. And our job at CoaST is to try and help that happen. By collaboration, and collective clout.
