The country is bordered to the north by Laos and Burma, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and Burma. By the maritime boundary, the country is bordered to the southeast by Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand, to the southwest by Indonesia and India in the Andaman Sea.

The capital and largest city of Thailand is Bangkok. It is also the country’s centre of political, commercial, industrial and cultural activities. Bangkok is known in Thai as “Krung Thep Mahanakorn,” or, more colloquially, “Krung Thep.”

Thailand is considered to be the world’s 50th largest country in terms of total area, with a surface area of approximately 513,000 km² (198,000 sq mi), and the world’s 20th largest country in terms of population with approximately 63 million people. The population consists 80% of Thais, 10% of Chinese, and 3% of Malay. The rest are minorities such as Mons, Khmers, and various hill tribes. The country’s official spoken and written language is Thai.

On 17 November, the National Geographic Museum in Washington DC opened up its exhibit of the famous Terra Cotta Warriors discovered in Xian in the People’s Republic of China. Fifteen human figures were on display as well as an array of other artifacts, and the museum has them set up so visitors can get closer than they would be able to at Xian itself.

I was there to photograph the exhibit on behalf of Cultural Tourism DC, an organization that I do photo-volunteer work for (ordinary visitors are not allowed to take pictures, so I consider myself extremely lucky and feel deeply grateful to Cultural Tourism DC having me do this work for them).

I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II SLR with primarily my Canon L-series 24-105mm short zoom lens. I touched the pictures up using Adobe LIghtroom 2.3 and Photoshop Elements 7.0 with the Topaz Detail and Topaz Adjust plug-ins (and used the Noiseware 2.0 standalone application to knock down the graininess that shooting at high ISOs results in).

People who are interested in visiting the exhibit can find out more information about it at this link.

People who are interested in finding out more about the host of activities and events that Cultural Tourism DC puts on or sponsors can go to this link.

Lastly, I’ve posted the complete set of pictures I took at this link on flickr. If you want to use the pictures, feel free to do so. I only ask that if you use them in any publication, you let me know and give me a byline (because I am trying to build-up my photographer’s resume).
