History: The rulers of Kollam (Desiganadu) and China, exchanged embassies and there was a flourishing Chinese settlement at Kollam. Merchant Sulaiman of Siraf in Persia (9th century) found Kollam to be the only port in India, touched by the huge Chinese junks , on the way to Carton of Persian Gulf. Marco Polo ,the great Venician traveller ,who was in Chinese service under Kublahan in 1275, visited Kollam , in his capacity as a Chinese mandarin. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a trading centre at Kollam in 1502. Then came the Dutch followed by the British in 1795. A British garrison was stationed at Kolam in pursuance of a treaty between Tranvancore and the British.

The capital and largest city of Thailand is Bangkok. It is also the country’s centre of political, commercial, industrial and cultural activities. Bangkok is known in Thai as “Krung Thep Mahanakorn,” or, more colloquially, “Krung Thep.”

Thailand is considered to be the world’s 50th largest country in terms of total area, with a surface area of approximately 513,000 km² (198,000 sq mi), and the world’s 20th largest country in terms of population with approximately 63 million people. The population consists 80% of Thais, 10% of Chinese, and 3% of Malay. The rest are minorities such as Mons, Khmers, and various hill tribes. The country’s official spoken and written language is Thai.
