Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis.

An ailment which make it difficult, even painful to breathe is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) It is almost always caused by a lifetime of smoking cigarettes.

Often COPD is a mixture of two diseases:

The airways to the lungs also called bronchial tubes get inflamed and produce lots of mucus with chronic bronchitis. The mucus can narrow or even block the airways making it challenging to breathe.

Someone with healthy lungs has balloon like, tiny air sacs in the lungs. These tiny air sacs adjust to accept air into the lungs, as you breathe they increase and decrease in space. The illness emphysema damages these air sacs to the stage that they have no stretch left in them. A person with emphysema feels short of breath because there is actually less air getting in to the lungs.
