I have completed the Travel and Tourism Course from IITTM, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Now i am working in the Customer Service Department dealing with Tours and Packages in the Travel Company in Mumbai. I have also got experiences in the Customer Service working for 13 months in Airtel.

I am planning on starting a career in travel or tourism in Ireland and I would like to know what would be better? CMIT offers a Distance Learning Diploma in International Travel studies whereas Portobello School offers full-time and part-time courses including Travel and Tourism.

so basically just general info on the major airlines, ferry operators, and rail operators and how they link in with travel and tourism. Obviously with travel arrangements being crucial etc.

The origins of travelling dates back to hundreds of years ago but at those times, people were only travelling or relocating or trade. Later on, towards the end of middle ages, rich European families started sending their kids to study in other countries… A young man would then travel from lets say London to Amsterdam, to Franfurt, Zurich, Rome, Pairs and back to London some long months later… This was called "The Grand Tour". The idea of travelling for leisure is more recent though. It all began in the mid-19th century when steam trains were introduced in the UK. Before this period, travelling was a hassle as it would take long on carriages and horses so people would only travel if they had to. But with the introduction of trains, cities became closer and as technology advanced, cheaper too. Thos Cook was the first person to introduce package tours in this period. He would arrange a train ticket to a family and also hotel vouchers in their destination. Only domestic travel in the UK of course.. But in time, as economy of Europe boosted and people had more free time and disposible income (the money thats left in your pocket after you pay your rent, bills and other necessary items like grocery shopping and so on). So they stated travelling further. During this period, the southern coast of the UK became a very popular destination. It was even once believed that drinking sea water would solve most of people’s health problems…

Anyway, so it went on like this for many years until jet aircraft were introduced in the 60s. With the new technology, cities became even more closer and tarvelling became much more affordabel. Peple now could fly to Malaga from London in just over 2 hours.

Now, you probably stated seeing the link between different sectors within the tourism and travel industry. For a person to be able to go on a holiday, you need a travel agent to arrange the hotel, transfers and flight tickets. An airline to take people to their destinations, a hotel to accomodate people and various companies to transfer them from airports to their respective hotels… The link is crucial. One wouldn’t exist without the other.

On another issue, travel industry is indirectly linked with many other industries such as: furniture industry (makes furnitures for hotels), construction (building hotels), food industry (supplying food for hotels and airlines), aeronautical industry (building planes), car industy (coaches, rental cars etc) and many more to count…

i am doing travel and tourism at college and i am interested in going into retail travel for thomson, i am just wondering what other jobs will be available to me if i get the full national diploma? (i don’t really like the idea of leaving the UK at this moment in time).
