in what ways is relying on tourism for development of a country good and bad?

March 62010

The tourist market is highly flexible and is determined by the world as a whole in terms of world economic markets and world global affairs. Tourism is highly advantageous for developping countries as it helps to bring economical benefits into its economy which can encourage economic development in terms of its services and infrastructure. However tourists cause highly uneven patterns of development within a country as they tend only to benefit a local population where they are travelling to. Naturally, they encourage health services to improve, water and sanitation facilities to adapt etc however they also promote job potential for the indigenous population. Tourist being a melange of problems to a country – exploitation of the environment, promoting cheap labour in the third world – increasing waste and decreasing food and water supplies in very marginalised areas in the developping world. Naturally, the developed world can cater for tourism on much a larger scale and so tourism benefits more for their economy than the south and increases their economic development on much as further rate. On the whole, the benefits of tourism is highly uneven and unfair!!!!!!

Responsible Tourism – Doing Business, Doing Good

March 12010

Tourism can be a driving force for employment creation and income increase in the developing world. Especially in these times of economic crisis, responsible travelling becomes an important value to many tourists. Chris Thompson, Travelife Sustainability Manager and Responsible Tourism Co-ordinator of FTO (Federation of Tour Operators): “At lease 2/3 of people walking into a travel agency are looking for authenticity, they are looking for something being put back into the local destination, and that we are actually enhancing livelihoods.”

It is possible to increase the profit for local people, while the tourism industry also wins. SNV Netherlands Development Organisation helps to develop responsible tourism, generating jobs and income for local people. This leads to a quality experience for tourists and good business for the travel industry

development of tourism industry in south asia?

February 242010

and the factors leading to its development.
please help!
thanks!

That is a very open question. Do you need to write an essay?

Look at where demand comes from.
Domestic demand comes from growing middle class, which now can afford travel in their own country and to abroad, e.g., the huge number of Chinese tourists.
International demand from the West and Japan comes from the baby boomer generation (which now is retiring and has money and time) and from their children (which has plenty of money due to the high real estate values).

What are the factors responsible for the development of tourism in himalayas?

February 212010

1. Attention was brought to this region of the world and made visiting it desirable:

Modern mass tourism in the Himalayan region started in 1950s after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed the Mt. Everest and made the region popular in other parts of the world, that had until then more or less ignored the region.

2. This region of the world became more accessible:

After the Indian-Chinese border war in 1962, a huge number of roads were built in the Indian part of the Himalayas – until 1970, 10 000 km of roads. Although their purpose was primarily a military one, they opened the region to modern mass transportation and foreign tourists

3. The attraction of this area is in the diversity of sports available:

The Himalayas offer the modern tourist a widespread range of possibilities: hiking, skiing, rafting, kayaking, canyoning, rock climbing, mountain biking, bungee jumping, paragliding etc

4. There are also unique cultural attractions:

Gorkha is the birth place of King Prithivi Narayan Shah – The Great, the founder of modern Nepal. Situated on a hill overlooking the snowy peaks of the himalayas, there is a beautiful old palace known as Gorkha Durbar. There are two attractive temples of Gorakhnath and Kali inside the palace precinct. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple of Gorakhnath. Gorkha can be reached in about 6 hours from Kathmandu and in about 4 hours from Pokhara. A side trip to Manakamana on the way to Gorkha is very enjoyable and interesting.

5. Eco-tourism has become popular:

Among all the places in India the Himalayan eco tourism is the most visited destination. Various regions in the Himalayas are still unexplored by the people. Its varied topography is the reason for travel attraction and eco tourism. The Himalayan region stretches from Jammu and Kashmir to the northeast end of Arunachal Pradesh. The region is rich in natural resources and showcases a variety of flora and fauna. It is also the home for various rare species.
