i am making a Power Point so it would help if the info was narrowed down a little

Pembrokeshire Greenways is an initiative which has been working for over 10 years to encourage local residents and visitors, of all abilities, to access the coast and countryside by sustainable modes of transport through walking, cycling, bus and train travel.

‘Greenways’ was the first project of its kind to be developed in Wales and was established in 1994 as a Countryside Council for Wales pilot project in South Pembrokeshire, under the management of SPARC (now PLANED).an EU-funded Leader Plus initiative (PLANED – formerly SPARC).

Due to the success of this pilot scheme the Greenways Project was extended to cover the whole of Pembrokeshire in 2000, under the management of the Greenways Partnership.

Greenways partners include the following organisations:
Countryside Council for Wales, National Trust, Pembrokeshire Access Group, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Pembrokeshire County Council, Pembrokeshire Local Health Board and PLANED.

Achievements to Date-
By working as a ‘Partnership’ Pembrokeshire Greenways has brought together all the agencies responsible for promoting and managing walking, cycling, bus and train development in Pembrokeshire. Here is a list of work are some examples of the achievements to date-

Sustainable tourism is based on the principles of a sustainable development in general. In the case of specialised tour operators it concerns three main areas:
- Sustainable management at home level: managing the office sustainably, using printing materials as little as possible or offsetting CO2 emissions are examples of this;
- On destination level: the services offered should be as sustainable as possible and on this basis tour operators should select their services. In this respect there seems to exist a widespread agreement that just labelling services as being sustainably sound is not enough and may even turn away potential tourists; a type of choice editing towards the tourist seems to be more suitable. Specialised tour operators have the advantage of their in-depth knowledge of specific services offered;
- On tourists’ level: tourists should be made aware of sustainability issues and foot prints they may leave; there is no sustainable tourism without “sustainable” tourists and the tour operator should play an important role to achieve this goal – little tangible as it may seem at times. The use of social media may be important and again this may be to the advantage of the smaller specialised tour operators.

I am doing a geography assessment and in order to get a high level, i need to evaluate how realistic sustainable tourism is in poor countries such as Gambia. If anybody has any information to help me, please do! Thanks

It is quite realistic as an aim at least. You need to strike a balance between people visiting the country and the damage they cause – what impact they have on the environment versus the benefits which can gained for the benefit of the people there. In underdeveloped countries like the Gambi there is more potential than way overdeveloped resorts such as you find wrecking the coastline of Spain.

In the case of the Gambia the British built an airport and the US extended the runway to land the Space Shuttle – this represents a major infrastructure investment – it seems right that it should be utilised.

If you banned tourism to the Gambia for instance they are likley to have to exist on peanuts (their major crop). Bear in mind some negatives like children who beg from tourist (which can be lucrative) as opposed to spending their time being educated to some purpose.

There is no doubt that something like the (controversial) Alex Haley book Roots has had a profound effect on the residents – sitting waiting for the tourists to arrive and seling the usual tat that you can buy anywhere in the third world strkes me a eminently unsustainable.

Tourism can be define as:

Whilst Eco-tourism is involving travel to areas of natural or ecological interest, typically under the guidance of a naturalist, for the purpose of observing wildlife and learning about the environment.

Example:
If I’m a tourist would like to travel in Bohol for pleasure of course. You will come up with questions. What can I see? What Bohol can offer to me? Well, Bohol has world class of scenery and beaches and exotic animals to offer for every tourist to visit. In order to sustained the beauty of the scenery and wild life people have to protect it for tourism purposes. Being maintained at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing severe ecological damage will help to balance the tourism industry and eco-tourism. Therefore without eco-tourism there is no tourism industry as well.
